Associate Professor Hiroshi Yamamoto

Associate Professor Hiroshi Yamamoto is a member of Japanese Language Education and Japanese Culture Studies course. His research focuses on modern history and modern literature.

What do you specialize in?

I focus on two fields. One is modern history and modern literature and the other is education for international students. In university, I majored in Warring States history and for my master’s program my interest shifted to historical narrative and historical consciousness. Then finally I’m at my current field. For education for international students, my experience as a tutor in graduate school made me want to get involved with Japanese education for international students.

What do you study about Japanese modern history and early modern literature?

My research focuses on Gunsho (軍書) written in the Edo period and Sengoku Gunki (戦国軍記) written about the Warring States period. My research follows with the relation of the politics and political and social situations when they were generated. For research methodology, I mainly use historical sources but I’m also using textual analysis to qualitatively understand nature of Sengoku Gunki.

What kind of research do you do for education on international students?

I’m interested in academic skills for upper Japanese level students, combined classes with Japanese and international students, and internships for international students. For research on combined classes, I’m doing research on the language problems used in class, and impressions the students have.

What do you expect from graduate students at Kanazawa university?

I want them to have a diverse view not limited to their field of research. Although academic fields are categorized into small specialized areas, there are often times when other fields, which seem to have no relation, can give you important insights. I hope that they will realize the joy and deepness of research while looking not only about their own field but also others.
